In the works of Kaneuji Teppei, existing images and objects, such as maps, visuals from cosmetic ads, certain types of action figure, plug sockets, and PET bottles, are cut out, dismantled, then joined with other things to be recomposed as organic forms. Kaneuji's materials are divorced from their original functions, connected to other things so as to merge and re-emerge as works of art suggestive of musical rhythms and melodies. This piece, White Discharge (figure/green army) #1˜30 consists of a green soldier action figure enveloped by a white monster with an expressive face. Here once again Kaneuji has employed his own peculiar technique to produce a work that at first glance is a piece of charming whimsy, but then reveals a sharply malicious edge.
A solo show by Kaneuji Teppei is scheduled at the Yokohama Museum of Art from March 20 - May 25, 2009. For the exhibition the entire venue will be transformed into a single dynamic space, at the nucleus of which will be the artist's first attempt at a video installation, an animation combining drawings and photographs. Ahead of the show, from August 29 - October 1, Cafe Ogurayama at the Museum will run Kaneuji Teppei: Discharge!!, an event designed to raise funds for the exhibition by displaying original illustrations used for the animation, and also showcasing all 30 Kaneuji Teppei ART iT originals.
